According to police, a guy was detained in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in online crimes, particularly financial ones.
Multiple raids were carried out on Tuesday in the state in conjunction with the Central Bureau of Investigation, according to a senior officer of the Assam Police (CBI).
“Based on cases reported to the Assam Police, we carried out the raids in Bongaigaon and Majuli. During the raid, one individual from Bongaigaon was detained, he continued.
Another suspect, also from Majuli, has been reported missing; according to family and neighbours, he hasn’t visited the hamlet since 2004, the officer told PTI.
He said, “The detectives found a duplicate NRC list from the residence of the Majuli suspect and seized a mobile phone and some documents from the arrested person in Bongaigaon.”
According to the officer, the Assam Police took action based on a variety of cases that were reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in 2019.
The CBI launched “Operation Chakra” against cybercriminals involved in financial crimes on Tuesday in collaboration with Interpol, the FBI, and police forces from several nations. As part of the operation, police from various states searched 115 locations.
The CBI has filed 11 cases against internet-based financial fraudsters, and the agency has searched 87 addresses across 16 states, while state police forces have raided 28 places.
According to a statement from the CBI, the operation involved the police forces of eight different states and union territories, including Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Assam, Karnataka, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, and Haryana.
Bank accounts in Karnataka with a balance of around Rs 1.89 crore have been frozen, and the agents have also confiscated about Rs 1.8 crore in cash and 1.5 kg of gold.
Interpol, the FBI, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Australian Federal Police all worked together to coordinate the action.
