Cyclone Asani 500 kilometers off the coast of Odisha; heavy rain in several states

According to the Met Department, severe cyclonic storm Asani was roughly 590 kilometers southwest of Puri and 510 kilometers south-southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha on Tuesday. The storm, which had been moving at 12 kmph in a west northwest direction for the previous six hours, will weaken by Tuesday night when it approached the shores of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, causing heavy rain.

The cyclone will not make landfall in Odisha or Andhra Pradesh, according to IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra, but will proceed parallel to the east coast and cause heavy rain.

The state of Odisha had prepared to evacuate residents from four coastal districts. All ports in the state had also erected Distant Warning Signal 2 (telling ships not to approach the coast).
Heavy rain was expected in Telangana, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, in addition to Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Rain and thundershowers are predicted to occur in one or two locations in some Telangana districts over the next four to five days, according to the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre.

Until Thursday, significant rain was forecast across Bengal’s southern reaches, including Kolkata, Howrah, Purba Medinipur, the North and South 24 Parganas, and Nadia districts. According to the IMD, considerable rain is also expected in Jharkhand.
