According to the Indian Meteorological Department, severe cyclonic storm Asani over Southeast and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal is expected to proceed northwestwards until May 10 and approach Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha (IMD). At 5 p.m. IST on Sunday, Asani became a strong cyclonic storm over the Southeast Bay of Bengal, roughly 610 kilometers northwest of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands).
From May 10 evening, a severe cyclonic storm will bring light to moderate rainfall to a few locations, with heavy rainfall in isolated parts, over neighboring areas of north coastal Andhra Pradesh. On Wednesday, May 11, light to moderate rainfall with occasional heavy rainfall is expected over coastal Odisha and bordering coastal portions of north Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
Andhra-Odisha coast and would likely miss it by 100 kilometers. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in several parts of coastal Odisha starting Tuesday evening, with severe rainfall (7-11cm) in one or two areas in the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.
Over the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal on Thursday, light to moderate rainfall with occasional severe rains is expected. “During the next 5 days, fair to widespread light/moderate rainfall with thunderstorms/lightning/gusty winds is extremely possible over Northeast India.”
Isolated heavy falls are quite likely over Arunachal Pradesh from the 10th to the 12th of May, as well as Assam-Meghalaya and Mizoram-Tripura from the 09th to the 12th of May,” the IMD said in a rainfall warning for Northeast India.
