Two people were given death sentences on Tuesday by a Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) court for the gangrape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in the Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha. Due to a lack of evidence, two additional defendants were found not guilty. In August 2014, the incident happened.
Judge Ajay Mohanty of the Fast Track Court found the two defendants guilty of murdering the young girl and sexually assaulting her, and he sentenced them to death by hanging in accordance with Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, due to a lack of strong evidence, the judge exonerated two other defendants.
The young girl was abducted by four village boys on August 21, 2014, as she was on her way home from the local market where she had gone to purchase chocolates. The young child was discovered by locals and transferred to a nearby private nursing care in Cuttack, where she was later pronounced dead.
