Doctor facing murder charges commits suicide, FORDA calls for investigation; Rajasthan

A group of resident doctors in Rajasthan’s Dausa has called for a thorough probe into the deaths of a pregnant woman and an obstetrician. The police reported on Tuesday that Dr. Archana Sharma committed herself after being charged with the death of the pregnant woman.

Family members of the pregnant woman protested outside Dr Sharma and her husband’s hospital, demanding urgent action, according to news agency PTI. An FIR was filed against the doctor at the Lalsot Police Station.

Sharma hanged herself to death, according to police, because she was stressed about the FIR. “The doctor was charged with the death of the pregnant woman as a result of poor treatment.” “The doctor hanged herself to death at her home above the hospital this afternoon,” Additional SP (Dausa) Lal Chand Kayal told PTI.

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has written to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, requesting a thorough inquiry, the removal of the FIR, and compensation for the obstetrician’s family in the instance of the suicide.

The association wrote in the letter that the “tragic incidence of Dr Archana Sharma’s suicide…is a tremendous loss for the state as well as for the nation.”

According to the association, post-partum haemorrhage is a well-known problem in pregnant women following delivery, and a doctor “cannot be accused of medical negligence in any such incidence without a proper examination by an expert committee,” according to Supreme Court norms.

Parsadi Lal Meena, Rajasthan’s health minister, said police should not have booked the doctor under Section 302 because the Supreme Court has already decided that doctors cannot be prosecuted under that section.
