Drones to Monitor Minorities in J&K Amid Attacks on Civilians

In the latest brutal attacks in Jammu & Kashmir, 11 civilians from the minority group were killed. Kashmiri pandits and other minorities have long been a target in the region.

Meanwhile, the administration of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has decided to use drones to monitor regions in the valley where minorities live. Following a recent rash of targeted killings in the valley, the government has taken steps to improve minorities’ security.

Aerial surveillance was set up for the regions where minorities dwell in Srinagar, as well as Lal Chowk, the city centre, ahead of Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to J&K, by local police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Mathev A John, deputy inspector general of the CRPF (operations), told reporters that the CRPF and local police had tested drones that will be deployed for aerial surveillance of regions where minorities live. “The decision was made in the context of recent attacks on members of the minority community and migrant labourers,” he explained.

Drones were tested by police and the CRPF in Srinagar’s Pratap Park area, and security was reinforced even more ahead of Amit Shah’s arrival to the state.
