The massive fire broke out through a container depot in Bangladesh’s southeastern town of Sitakunda leading five people dead and 100 injured, officials said Sunday.
According to the fire official, Jalal Ahmed said the fire broke out at an inland container storage facility just 40 kilometers (25 miles) outside of the country’s main seaport of Chittagong shortly before midnight.
Multiple firefighting units rushed to the area where the fire took place and try to douse the fire off when a massive explosion rocked that leads injuring tallies of people, including firefighters. Many were injured, some 20 people were in critical condition with burns covering between 60 to 90 percent of their bodies.
Till Sunday morning the emergency and rescue teams were still working to put out the fire and the burnt victims were treated at local hospitals, including military clinics.
Ruhul Amin Sikder, a spokesman for the Bangladesh Inland Container Association (BICA), said some of the containers at the 30-acre private depot contained chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide.
