Glen “Big Baby” Davis, the former Boston Celtics player, has been released from prison nearly two years after being sentenced for a significant health insurance fraud scheme involving former NBA athletes. After serving 17 months of a 40-month federal sentence, Davis is eager to embark on a new chapter in his life.
The NBA Health Care Fraud Scheme
The fraud case first emerged in October 2021 when federal prosecutors accused a group of former NBA players of submitting false medical reimbursement claims to the league’s health insurance plan.
Prosecutors allege that from 2017 to 2019, the group filed around $5 million in bogus medical and dental claims, ultimately receiving approximately $2.5 million in payments. In total, 18 former players were implicated, along with several accomplices. Investigators reported that the players submitted falsified invoices for services that were never performed, including costly dental and chiropractic treatments.
Former New Jersey Nets guard Terrence Williams was identified as the alleged ringleader of the operation. He was sentenced to ten years in federal prison in 2023, while several other players also received prison sentences. Among those sentenced were:

- Alan Anderson: 24 months
- Glen Davis: 40 months
Davis received the second-longest sentence among the implicated players. In addition to his prison term, he was ordered to pay $80,000 in restitution, attend financial management classes, and engage in drug treatment programs.
Early Release and Halfway House
Despite his original sentence of over three years, Davis was released after serving approximately 17 months. Following his release, he will enter a halfway house program in Long Beach, California, to continue meeting the conditions of his sentence. Federal records indicate he will remain under supervision until July 2026, after which he will enter a three-year period of supervised release.
