According to the International Monetary Fund, Chief Economist Gita Gopinath will quit the organisation in January of next year to return to Harvard University.
In January 2019, the 49-year-old famous Indian-American economist was appointed Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
When she joined the Washington-based global lender, she was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University.
Gopinath, who was born in Mysuru, is the IMF’s first female Chief Economist.
In a statement announcing Gopinath’s departure, IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva said, “She made history as the Fund’s first female Chief Economist, and we benefited enormously from her sharp intellect and deep knowledge of international finance and macroeconomics as we navigated through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.”
