Government of Meghalaya signs contract with NEEPCO for two hydropower projects
Meghalayan government and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. have inked a contract to develop two hydroelectric projects in the state.
According to an official release, the Meghalayan government and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. have inked a contract to develop two hydroelectric projects in the state. The two companies inked a contract for the development of the 50 MW Wah Umiam Hydro Electric Project Stage I and the 100 MW Wah Umiam Hydro Electric Project Stage II. At the event were NEEPCO Director (Personnel) Anil Kumar, State Power Department Joint Secretary D D Shira, and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
Tynsong expressed his appreciation to NEEPCO and referred to the signing of the contract as a "important and significant occasion." The minister also promised that the state government will give the project's executing agency all the assistance it needs to finish it as soon as possible. Tynsong, who oversees the state electricity division, claimed that Meghalaya's biggest issue is with its generation.
According to him, the state can only create 350 MW of power at the moment, whereas 650 MW are needed, and a deal with the CPSU is crucial. Meghalaya produces less than 250 MW of power while having the capacity to produce 3,000 MW, claims the deputy chief minister. He encouraged the power division and NEEPCO to collaborate in turning Meghalaya into a generator of excess electricity. Additionally, Tynsong claimed that NEEPCO and the administration are doing all possible to increase the state's capability for producing electricity.
