The key culprit in Assam’s kidney trafficking case was transported back to the state from Tamil Nadu, where he was detained three days ago. Yesterday, a municipal court sentenced him to six days of police remand.
Plaban Borthakur, a suspect in illicit kidney trafficking, had been missing for four months before being found in Coimbatore, a town some 500 kilometers from Tamil Nadu’s capital Chennai, according to Morigaon superintendent of police Aparna Natarajan.
The accused was granted interim bail, which was afterward challenged by the Assam Police in the Gauhati High Court, which denied it on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence against him. Mr. Borthakur, on the other hand, had gone into hiding by that time.
In July of this year, Assam authorities discovered an illicit kidney transplant ring in the state. People in desperate need of money would be duped into donating their kidneys in exchange for money, and they would only be paid a portion of it. The racket’s initial victims were discovered in Morigaon, and shortly after, complaints began to emerge from all around the state. Mr. Borthakur’s name was mentioned in several of the allegations.
According to police sources, five people have been arrested in connection with the case, four of them have been released on bail.
