Captain Abhilasha Barak became the country’s first female combat aviator on Wednesday, a significant source of pride for the country. After successfully completing training, she became the first woman officer in history to join the Army Aviation Corps as a Combat Aviator. Director General and Colonel Commandant Army Aviation have granted her the coveted wings, along with 36 other Army pilots.
According to the Army, 15 female officers expressed interest in joining Army Aviation, but only two officers were chosen after passing the Pilot Aptitude Battery Test and medical. Both of them received their training at Nashik’s Combat Army Aviation Training School.
“Golden Letter Day in the history of Indian Army Aviation,” the Indian Army wrote as it shared photos from the ceremony on Twitter. Previously, women in the Army Aviation Corps were only assigned to ground duties. Two female officers were selected for helicopter pilot training for the first time in June of last year.
