External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday that India’s entire oil purchases from Russia in a month are likely less than what Europe buys in an afternoon.
“I noticed you mention buying oil. If you’re considering purchasing electricity from Russia, I’d recommend focusing your efforts on Europe. We do purchase some electricity, as it is required for our energy security. However, based on the numbers, I believe our total purchases for the month will be less than what Europe purchases in an afternoon “When asked about India’s oil purchase from Russia, Mr Jaishankar told a reporter.
Following the completion of the 2+2 ministerial, Mr Jaishankar addressed a joint news conference with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his American counterparts, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
On the question of oil purchases, the White House defended India, stating that its overall buy is less than 2%, compared to 10% in the US.
“Did President Trump receive assurances from Prime Minister Modi that Russian energy shipments will not be accelerated or increased?” During her daily press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked the question.
President Joe Biden stated during the virtual summit that the US is here to assist India in diversifying its oil import sources. “Imports from the United States are already sizable – perhaps far larger than those from Russia. And, of course, we – the President made it clear that increasing that is not in their best interests. But, beyond that, I’d leave it up to the Indian leaders to speak for themselves “she stated
Ms Psaki told reporters that by importing oil, India is not breaking any sanctions. “It’s a judgment we made in the United States,” she continued, “but we also realize that different countries have different considerations.”
