Sanna Irshad Mattoo, a local freelance photojournalist, has been named the Pulitzer Prize winner for feature photography in the year 2022.
For coverage of the Covid-19 issue in India, Sanna shared the award with the Reuters team, which included the late Danish Siddiqui, Amit Dave, and Adnan Abidi.

The Pulitzer Prizes website announced the honor for “pictures of COVID’s toll in India that combined intimacy and horror while affording viewers a heightened sense of location.” The judges moved their work from the breaking news photography category, according to the Pulitzer website.
Sanna has work featured in international media sites such as Al Jazeera, TIME, and TRT World, and holds a Master’s in Convergent Journalism from the Central University of Kashmir. In 2021, she completed a fellowship with the prestigious Magnum Foundation.
“Sanna Irshad Mattoo is a photojournalist and documentary photographer located in Kashmir,” Sanna’s Pulitzer introduction reads. Her work focuses on conveying the conflict between the seeming ordinariness of life and the harsh symbolism of a terrifying militarised milieu of Kashmir, ranging from breaking news to in-depth storytelling. Her work has been featured in newspapers and journals all around the world, as well as aired and displayed at different festivals and events. She currently works as a Multimedia Journalist for Reuters.
