Officials in Arunachal Pradesh said on Tuesday that landslides driven by heavy rains wrecked havoc, cutting down connectivity in many regions. They reported a big landslide blocked the route between Itanagar and Ziro in the Lower Subansiri district, disrupting road connectivity. They stated that hundreds of vehicles were stranded while road clearance activities were in progress. Mudslides also closed the road between Itanagar and Gohpur in Assam. Officials said landslides were recorded from the Karsingsa block point along the Itanagar-Banderdewa NH-415, as well as from Itanagar Gompa and RWD Colony.
“A landslide killed three members of a nine-member household; after being struck to the family’s kutcha hut,” an officer from the Itanagar Police Station said. Three members of the family were buried alive. Another two persons were critically injured. Four additional people, including children, escaped damage.”
Even after more than 40 hours of search operations, the whereabouts of the woman, who was buried alive with two others in a landslide at Punjabi Dhaba on Sunday night, are unknown, authorities said. The rescue mission is being hampered by bad weather, with fresh landslides being reported on the scene, they said.
On Monday afternoon, two PWD laborers were buried in a landslide near Ganga-Jully Basti Road while attempting to rescue a motorcycle stuck in the muck.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, landslides in Modirijo hamlet near Shiv Mandir area along NH-415 between Itanagar and Naharlagun took away at least two homes. However, there were no casualties as a result of the disaster.
