Learn about the History of Donuts which was once called Oily Cake On National Donut Day

The donut turns 175 years old on 3 June 2022. There is National Donut Day, a holiday that’s celebrated on the first Friday of every June, and there’s National Doughnut Day that’s celebrated on November 5th every year.

Hanson Gregory, an American, claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut in 1847 abroad a lime-trading ship when he was 15-years-old. Gregory was not pleased with the greasiness of doughnuts twisted into various shapes and with the raw center of regular doughnuts.

June 3, 2022, this year in honor of the Salvation Army members who fed the deep-fried rings of fried dough to American soldiers in Europe during World War I. And till this day as remembering, the National Donut Day was celebrated on the first Friday of June. Most sweet shops or restaurants offer free discounts to their customers.

In 1847, the idea struck a teenager sailor Gregory who was 15 at that time thought of an innovative solution to a problem plaguing the hungry crew of the sailing ship Ivanhoe.

Dough that was deep-fried in cauldrons of lard had been served to sailors on the seas for centuries. Dutch cooks made a notable version called oily cakes.
