The University of Kentucky, renowned for its basketball legacy, is grappling with challenges in its football program. The Wildcats, who have historically excelled in the hardwood arena, are now struggling on the gridiron, raising questions about the path forward under head coach Mark Stoops.
Football’s Struggles at Kentucky
The University of Kentucky is widely recognized as a powerhouse in college basketball, boasting the most all-time victories and the highest winning percentage in men’s college basketball history, alongside eight NCAA championships. However, its football program has faced a stark contrast in performance. The Wildcats last claimed a national title in football in 1950, and despite some successes, their overall record stands at just around .500. Over the past 40 years, the football team has finished ranked only twice, both times under current head coach Mark Stoops, who has directed the program since 2013.
Current Season and Coach’s Response
This season has not started well for the Wildcats, who currently hold a 2-3 record after a recent loss to Georgia, 35-14. Kentucky is still seeking its first win in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) this year, having finished last season with a disappointing 1-7 record in league play. Now in his 13th season, Stoops has an overall record of 79-76, with a concerning 28-65 against SEC opponents.
Rumors surfaced following reports from a Lexington radio station about Stoops possibly negotiating a buyout with the university, which he vehemently denied, stating, “There’s zero chance I’m walking away.” However, financial implications suggest that a buyout could be substantially beneficial for Stoops.

Stoops inked a lucrative contract in 2022 that extends through the 2031 season, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football with an annual salary of $8.6 million, plus incentives. As it stands, a buyout would equate to 75% of the remaining contract, valued at about $42.4625 million should the university decide to part ways with him now.
During his tenure, Stoops has led the Wildcats to notable seasons, including a 10-3 finish and national rankings in 2018 and 2021. However, the program faced setbacks last year, finishing with a 4-8 record and vacating wins from the 2021 season due to penalties for offering impermissible benefits. After successful seasons from 2016 to 2023, the Wildcats are experiencing another challenging year, prompting increasing speculation regarding Stoops’s future.
Although Stoops remains firm in his commitment to the team, the ultimatum may ultimately rest in the hands of the university.
