The locals of Shangpung hamlet in Meghalaya’s Jaintia hills are said to have battered four of the five under-trial inmates to death before they escaped from Jowai district prison on Saturday.
On Sunday, numerous videos of the assault were extensively shared on social media. The locals can be seen hitting the escaped captives with rods and sticks in the recordings.
On September 10, the gang had escaped the Jowai district Jail after a guard had been stabbed. According to sources, one of them is a “I Love You Talang” murder suspect. The other members are Lodestar Tang, Marsanki Tariang, Shidorki Dkhar, Rikmenlang Lamare, and Ramesh Dkhar.
According to Press Trust of India news agency, Inspector General of Prisons Jerry FK Marak, “Six detainees escaped from the district jail at around 2 am.” The official is investigating the situation in its early stages.
When one of the escapees went to a nearby tea shop to buy food, several of the residents recognised him and alerted authorities. Following the inmates’ escape into the neighbouring bush, the entire village learned about it and began to pursue them. After capturing them, the villagers encircled the fugitives and beat them.
However, on Tuesday, residents of the Barato region apprehended and turned over to police the last prisoner of the six who had escaped from the Jowai district jail in Meghalaya on Saturday.
Superintendent of police (SP) B.K. Marak of the West Jaintia Hills stated, “The last prison escapee, Rikmenlang Lamare (UTP) of Barato village, was discovered, captured by Barato people, and given back to us unhurt.
