Thousands of rupees' worth of products have been damaged, a market complex merchant told PTI. Shillong Municipal Board and Fire Department representatives thought the incident might have been caused by a short circuit.

Ampareen Lyngdoh, an MLA from the area, hurried over to assess the situation. Later on in the day, the representative will speak about the affected merchants' relocation when he meets with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
