According to a fire official in the national capital’s Rohini region, a 64-year-old patient on a ventilator died after a fire broke out in the hospital where he was admitted on Saturday. The dead, Ramsevak, a Prem Nagar resident, was suffering from renal failure and was on a ventilator.
According to the official, they received a call about the fire at the Braham Shakti Hospital in Rohini, northwest Delhi, at 5 a.m., and nine fire tenders were dispatched immediately.
Atul Garg, head of Delhi Fire Services, said that nine fire engines were dispatched to the scene to put out the blaze. “In Rohini, a fire broke out in the 3rd (ICU) ward of Brahm Shakti Hospital. A total of nine fire tenders were dispatched. Except for one patient who was on a ventilator and is believed to have died, everyone has been rescued safely. “The incident was detected in the ICU ward on the third level of the hospital building,” said Atul Garg of the Delhi Fire Service, adding that all patients were successfully evacuated except one who was on life support.
He said that no firefighting system was found to be operational, and that the exit gate was locked.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police, who received a call about the incident, took notice of it and filed a FIR at Vijay Vihar police station under sections 285 (Negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), 287 (Negligent conduct with respect to machinery), and 304 A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to Pranav Tayal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini district), the patient on the ventilator died since the electricity and oxygen supplies were cut off due to the fire.
