Indian nuclear tests between 11 and 13 May of 1994 saw five bombs exploded in Pokhran, Rajasthan. This was the first time in history that a nuclear explosion was carried out underground. The tests began at 3.45pm on 11 May, under the code name Operation Shakti, when two fusion bombs and one fission bomb were detonated.
“India carried out three underground nuclear tests in the Pokhran range today at 15:45 hours.” When India successfully carried out the Pokhran nuclear tests – a series of five explosions under ‘Operation Shakti’ at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan on 11th May 1998, former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee stated “, “There is a fission device, a low yield device, and a thermonuclear device.”
Now, 24 years later, National Technology Day is observed every year to honor the accomplishments of scientists, researchers, engineers, and others working in science and technology.
The entire nation is celebrating ‘National Technology Day’ today, May 11th, to honor the builders of such technological advances and to remember the achievements of the Indian scientists, engineers, and inventors involved in the momentous milestone.
On the occasion of National Technology Day, Prime Minister Modi used Twitter to thank scientists for their contributions to the successful Pokhran experiments in 1998. PM also remembers former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his outstanding leadership during the test on this day.
