In a row of 12 ropeway trollies that crashed with each other in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district, at least one person died and scores remain stranded mid-air, according to news agency PTI, citing a senior official. The tragedy occurred on a Sunday afternoon near Baba Baidyanath Temple in Trikut Hills.
The Trikut ropeway is India’s highest vertical ropeway, with a maximum lens angle of 44 degrees, according to the state tourism department’s website. The 766-meter ropeway, which has 25 cabins, is located on a 392-meter-high hill.
Manjunath Bhajantri, the Deputy Commissioner of Deoghar, said that a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been working since Sunday night to rescue the trapped tourists, and that two Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters have been involved in the operation, which has lasted nearly 20 hours.
One of the Mi-17 helicopters conducted a reconnaissance mission in the morning.
