Schools to introduce ‘Gilli danda’ and other indigenous sports

75 Bharatiya Games, include gilli danda, kabbadi, posham pa, and kanche. As part of a series of activities in the education and skills development sector to mark the execution of the National Education Policy, Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled these games. According to reports, a number of games from various states have been suggested for inclusion in schools. One of these sports was “gilli danda,” which is only played by the Santhal tribe of Odisha.

“Not just any promotion of Indian games in schools is intended. The main goal is to increase diversity in school sports. For instance, popular school sports like basketball or badminton cannot be played at rural schools due to a lack of facilities. Why should we limit their involvement?” IKS’s national coordinator, Ganti S. Murthy, was quoted by HT as saying. He continued by stating that the intention was to promote local games that used fewer resources. Considerably older than 5,000 years, “gilli danda” is also mentioned in a line from the Mahabharata, where it is stated that Krishna, Arjun, and Bhima are playing the game.
