The Pakistan National Assembly is scheduled to elect the country’s 23rd prime minister on Monday, after Imran Khan was ousted from power in parliament early Sunday morning by a no-confidence resolution. Although Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) vice-chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also filed his nomination papers for the role on Sunday, Shehbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is expected to be elected as the new prime minister.
The National Assembly session, which was scheduled to start at 11 a.m. (local time), will now start at 2 p.m.
The National Assembly Secretariat released the order of the day for Monday, which states that the House would only discuss the election of the prime minister, which is governed by Article 91 of the Constitution and Rule 32 of the Rules of Business and Conduct of Business in the Assembly.
Sharif, the younger brother of deposed three-time prime leader Nawaz Sharif, led a rainbow coalition of socialist, liberal, and profoundly religious parties that ousted Khan on Sunday.
