Following an alleged stone-throwing attack by a gang of dealers on police and security personnel, a suspected drug dealer was killed in a police encounter in the Tinsukia region of Assam, according to authorities on Monday.
Police said that the crime occurred on Sunday in the Tongona Sengapathar neighbourhood. A crew stormed a home in Tongona hamlet where four suspected drug dealers were allegedly gathering after receiving a tip.
When they realised they were being surrounded by police, they “started throwing stones,” an official claimed. “Police warned them, but they continued to throw stones. One suspect was wounded in the leg by a senior officer, but when he tried to advance, further shots were fired at him, according to the police.
Following an hour-long battle, the drug dealers retreated, leaving their injured ally behind. The 36-year-old accused drug dealer was taken to Tinsukia Civil Hospital by police, where the medical staff pronounced him dead.
The body of the deceased was sent for a postmortem. According to the authorities, three of the deceased’s friends were also detained.
