Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, died at the age of 91. He allowed companies like Pizza Hut to enter Russia, and thus one of the greatest commercials of all time was created.

Mikhail, who ended the Cold War without bloodshed but failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union, died on Tuesday at the age of 91, hospital officials in Moscow said.

During his presidency, he is credited for his crucial role in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent reunification of Germany.

Congress leader, MP for Thiruvananthapuram and Indian Author Shashi Tharoor extended his condolences by recalling his meeting with him twice, on Mikhail’s passing away, “He will be remembered by many as a pragmatic leader who transformed the Soviet Union & led it to democracy but by others as the man who caused its collapse w/his policies of perestroika (restructuring)& glasnost (openness).”

He visited Delhi in November 1986 and India was the first Asian country he visited after becoming the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1985.
