A fast-track court in Assam sentenced three people to death on Friday for the rape and murder of two girls last year. On April 6, the trio was found guilty in the case.
They were sentenced to death by Special Judge C Chaturvedi of the Korajhar fast-track court. The suspects were apprehended on June 14, 2021, just days after the girls were discovered murdered.
The event sparked widespread outrage, prompting chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to order an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
“In the terrible case of rape and murder of two tribal child girls, the Hon. Sessions Court of Kokrajhar sentenced Muzamil, Najibul, and Farizul to death. On 13.6.21, I paid a visit to the family and instructed @lrbishnoiassam to constitute SIT and pursue the case to its logical conclusion “Shortly after the verdict, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
