With less than eight months until the state’s 2023 legislative elections, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb resigned on Saturday.
Deb became chief minister in 2018 when the BJP formed a government in Tripura in partnership with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), ending the Left Front’s nearly 25-year dominance.
“As Chief Minister, I attempted to strive for Tripura’s entire development and to do justice to its people.” For the 2023 Tripura assembly elections, the BJP plans to improve its party organization. If the party has a solid organization, it will be elected to power. It will be important to keep the BJP in power for a long period if a party activist like me strives to develop the organization,” Deb said shortly after filing his papers.
In the meantime, the BJP legislative party will meet on Saturday at 5.00 pm to elect a new leader. Central observers will include Union minister Bhupender Yadav and national general secretary Vinod Tawde. According to sources familiar with the situation, BJP Tripura in-charge Vinod Sonkar would also attend the meeting.
In 2018, Biplab Deb became the state’s first BJP Chief Minister, ending the Communist Party of India’s 25-year hegemony.
