30% of Nagaland's population consumes drugs; DGP Rupin Sharma

Rupin Sharma, the Nagaland Director-General of Police (prisons, house guards, and civil defence), made the startling admission that around 30% of the state's population uses drugs. DGP Sharma made the claim during a speech at the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School's annual inter-school sports event for the Dimapur branch of the All Nagaland Private Schools' Association (ANPSA).
Sharma asked the pupils to tell their teachers or the police if they know anyone who is into drugs. Sharma expressed concern about the rising consumption of drugs in the state and notably stated that many children are also affected by drugs. At the same time, Sharma suggested that the ANPSA and the school administration work together to develop a standard operating procedure to cope with pupils who are drug addicts.
He pleaded with the youngsters, "Help your friends who use drugs by telling your teachers or the police or else you will be encouraging them to prolong the addiction."
Additionally, he emphasised the need for improved programmes to be developed in order to contain the drug threat among students.
In Nagaland, "drug addiction" is a significant problem among young people. The percentage of the population in the state that is significantly impacted by drug usage is among the top 10 in India.
