Cyclone Mandous: 4 deaths in Tamil Nadu, traffic disruptions, waterlogging, and blackouts

From late Friday night to early Saturday morning, Cyclonic Storm Mandous inundated the region with strong winds and up to extremely heavy downpours, wreaking havoc along the southeast coast of India.

In Tamil Nadu, near to Mamallapuram, the storm made ashore between 11:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. yesterday. It produced howling winds at that time that raged at 65 to 75 kph with gusts as high as 85 kph. Residents of Chennai were unable to sleep because of these terrible weather conditions, which served as a reminder of nature's unequaled wrath.

Four people have died in Tamil Nadu as a result of Cyclone Mandous' late-night Friday landfall with winds of 75 kph along the coast. The cyclone is fading and is becoming a deep depression. Kovanur, Thimmasamudram, and Rajula Kandiga in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor suffer from overflowing rivers, flooded roads, and agitating traffic as a result of the area's excessive rains. Chennai experienced up to 115 mm of rain. Nearly 400 trees in Chennai were damaged by winds of 70 kmph as the weather system reached the coast between December 9 and 10, according to Chief Minister M K Stalin.

Boats have been damaged in Kovalam, which is adjacent to Mamallapuram, in addition to the stores along the seashore. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been stationed in ten districts, and the Tamil Nadu government has also opened more than 5,000 relief centers. In the Chengalpattu district alone, there are already 28 such centers housing 1,058 households.
