5.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Java island, killing 46 and injuring 700

On Monday, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Java, the largest island in Indonesia, killing at least 46 people and injuring 700 more. Numerous buildings were also damaged by the earthquake. According to the US Geological Survey, the 5.6-magnitude earthquake had its epicentre at a depth of 10 kilometres in the Cianjur district of West Java province.
According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, dozens of structures, including an Islamic boarding school, a hospital, and other public services, were damaged.
The amount of casualties and damage was still unknown, the statement stated, but information was being gathered. Greater Jakarta saw severe tremors. Some of the capital's high rises were evacuated as a result of the swaying.
The majority of the fatalities were reported from the provincial hospital in Cianjur, which collapsed as a result of the earthquake, according to Suharyanto, the director of Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
