A student was captured with firearms outside a high school in the US state of Texas on Wednesday, a day after a tragic shooting at a school in Uvalde killed 19 pupils and two teachers, according to media sources.
A man was apprehended while walking towards a Richardson high school with what appeared to be a gun. This comes after an 18-year-old shooter killed more than a dozen pupils the day before.
“On May 25, 2022, at 10:55 a.m., a business in the 1500 block of East Spring Valley Road called the Richardson Police Department to report a person brandishing what seemed to be a firearm. The individual was last seen traveling towards Berkner High School, which is situated at 1600 East Spring Valley Road, according to a news release from the Richardson Police Department.
Several police officers from various departments within the Richardson Police Department responded to Berkner High School within minutes after the report being dispatched and began a search and investigation into the incident. The police activity was broadcast to nearby schools.
Police officers were able to identify the male suspect as a Berkner High School student based on the information provided. Although the suspect was found inside Berkner High School, no firearms were discovered.
A vehicle utilized by the suspect was discovered in the parking area of 1551 East Spring Valley Road after more inquiry. Officers discovered an AK-47 style handgun and a replica AR-15 model Orbeez rifle inside the vehicle.
“The juvenile suspect was detained and charged with T.P.C. 46.02, a State Jail Felony, for Unlawful Carrying Weapons in a Weapon-Free School Zone. Due to the suspect’s age, no further information will be disclosed,” the police added.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the president of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) posed the question: “How many more children will die before leaders act?”
“How many more children will die before government leaders act to protect children and their schools safe, tragedy after tragedy, shooting after shooting, young life after young life?” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell enquired. “Because these horrors will continue until they do.”
