In the Lakhimpur district of Assam, a mob beat a rape and murder suspect to death on Thursday after he escaped from police custody on Tuesday, according to police officials.
Within the boundaries of the Ghilamara police station, Raju Baruah, also known as Gerjai, was hiding near a stream in the Kilakili village when he was discovered by some nearby villagers. The villagers quickly apprehended him and brutally beat him before turning him over to the police.
“On Thursday morning early, we learned of the incident. The suspect was already severely injured and unconscious when a police team arrived at the scene. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but he later passed away from his wounds, according to Lakhimpur superintendent of police BM Rajkhowa.
The defendant, who is in his late 40s, is a notorious felon in the community and has had more than a dozen murder, rape, and dacoity cases brought against him. His criminal activities are known to the community, he added.
In an effort to identify those responsible for the assault, the police have filed a murder complaint against unnamed individuals. But no arrests have been made as of yet.
