Senior Mizoram and Assam officials will meet again in Aizwal on Tuesday to discuss resolving the decades-old border issue.
Mizoram’s delegation will be led by Home Minister Lalchamliana, who will meet with Assam Minister Atul Bora’s team. The meetings will also include Lalchamliana’s cabinet colleague, Lalruatkima, and Assam minister Ashok Singhal.
Following the talks, the two sides will hold a press conference. They last met face to face in August 2021, following a dramatic border incident in July. In April, the two sides decided to move the negotiations to a higher level after two rounds of virtual sessions. Assam defined the parameters for the new negotiations.
Last July, when police units from both states traded fire at the disputed boundary, at least six officers and one citizen were killed, and over 60 people were injured. Assam and Mizoram share a 164.6-kilometer border that has been contested since demarcations in 1875 and 1933. Mizoram has insisted on the boundary established by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation in 1875, which includes regions now occupied by Assam, whereas Assam has insisted on the demarcation established in 1933.
