On October 9 at Jorhat, Assam, two wild elephants—among them a calf—were killed when the Rajdhani Express ran over them. On Monday, representatives from the Forest confirmed the information.
B Pegu, a forest official, told the media that the railroads were not complied with after the forest department requested that they reduce train speed due to elephant movement in the area.
In a separate instance, a rhino was also struck by a truck yesterday in the Haldibari region of Assam. CM Himanta Biswa also denounced the event.
Himanta reported that the vehicle had been stopped and fined while the rhino had survived the collision.
“Rhinos are our close buddies, and we won’t tolerate any interference with their territory. The Rhino survived the horrible encounter near Haldibari; the vehicle was stopped and fined,” Himanta tweeted.
In addition, the tweet added, “We’re working on a special 32-km elevated route as part of our pledge to safeguard animals at Kaziranga.Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, and Sadhguru Vasudev opened the Kaziranga National Park to visitors on September 22 for the current season.
