Sujoy Lal Thaosen, a senior member of the Indian Police Service (IPS), was appointed 37th Director General of the Central Reserve Police Unit (CRPF), the largest Central armed police force tasked with maintaining national security, on Monday.
An impeccable Guard of Honour saluted Thaosen, 1988-batch IPS officer from Madhya Pradesh cadre, and he began his duties as Director General of the CRPF earlier in the day. Thaosen previously served as Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Chief of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
Thaosen, an Assam native from Haflong in the Dima Hasao area, assumed leadership of the SSB head position on June 1. When Sanjay Arora, an IPS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre class of 1988, took over as commissioner of the Delhi Police, the position became vacant and he was given additional responsibility as ITBP DG.
Until his retirement on November 30, 2023, or until further orders, whichever comes first, Thaosen will now serve as the CRPF’s commander. The primary responsibility of the 3.5 lakh-strong CRPF is to provide internal security throughout the nation, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir and states that have been affected by naxal activity.
