Bear Grylls asserts that mental health issues are poorly addressed in UK schools
Bear Grylls, a British adventurer and television presenter best known for his show ‘Man vs. Wild,’ has some words of wisdom for the UK’s education system. According to Mirror.co.uk, he wants to improve the UK school system in terms of assisting students with mental health issues. While things are improving, he believes that schools are still “woefully ill-equipped” and are failing to teach children important life lessons. In an interview with The Mirror, Bear discussed how the state must continue to improve in order to help the next generation deal with what he calls an anxiety pandemic.
“I believe the UK’s school system is woefully inadequate,” he said. “None of this [mental health] stuff is taught, and I certainly wasn’t taught it in school.” According to Mirror, he stated that one of the main reasons we are seeing a “staggeringly high” number of suicides in people in their 40s and 50s is that that generation was simply not well equipped from a younger age. And he is determined to see that change in today’s society.
“It wasn’t something people discussed 20 or 30 years ago,” he admitted. “People frequently don’t know which way to turn when they lack the tools and framework to understand the battles they’re facing.” “I think we’re starting to get a little better,” he added, “but ultimately, we have to be our own doctors in life.” The ex-British Special Forces soldier went on to say: “We need to find things in our lives that help us be physically, mentally, and emotionally strong, as well as learn life skills; all of this is something that schools fail to teach people. We must be our own doctors in life.”
