TMC’s losing candidate from West Bengal’s Bongaon Dakshin constituency, Alo Rani Sarkar, has claimed that she was born in India in 1969 and had family property in Bangladesh, despite being declared a Bangladeshi citizen by the Calcutta High Court. Sarkar expressed her displeasure with the high court’s judgment and said she would challenge to the division bench, according to news agency ANI.

Sarkar claimed to be an Indian citizen based on a passport issued in her name, a voter’s card, a PAN card, and an Aadhar card, according to the judge. However, they are not Indian citizenship credentials, and she had never obtained them in line with the Citizenship Act of 1955.
The TMC candidate admitted in court that she became a Bangladeshi citizen after her marriage and that her name was entered on the country’s national identity card (NID) and on the electoral roll. She, on the other hand, stated that she accidentally enlisted her name as a Bangladeshi citizen on the country’s electoral roll, and that she has already filed an application with the relevant body in Bangladesh to have her name removed.
