Deep-sea fishing, China, and the outrage followed Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio, a Hollywood actor and film producer, recently spoke out against China’s deep-sea fishing business. Leonardo DiCaprio shared a New York Times piece headlined “How China Targets the Global Fish Supply” on Twitter in late September “China has expanded its deep-sea fishing fleet over the past two decades, diminishing its own fish stocks in the nearby oceans as a result. Their fishermen have since travelled to various oceans throughout the globe to carry on deep-sea fishing.”

The past two decades have seen China build its deep-sea fishing fleet into the thousands, resulting in China depleting its own stock of fish in oceans closest to them. In turn, their fishermen have sailed to other oceans across the world to continue deep-sea fishing.

Leonardo DiCaprio was urged to “respect facts and quit commenting irresponsibly” in a response to the story published by the Chinese state-owned Global Times, which claimed it was biased. In various interviews, Leonardo DiCaprio has discussed the climate problem, sustainable development, and related topics. ‘Before the Flood’ and ‘Ice on Fire’ are two documentaries he has also made about the subject.
