Dikkanchi D Shira, an MLA from Meghalaya’s Mahendraganj constituency and the wife of former chief minister and current Trinamool chief of Meghalaya Shri Mukul Sangma, slammed the current government over the recent land settlement between Assam and Meghalaya, claiming that both chief ministers signed the MoU without the consent of syiems, himas, and other stakeholder groups.
According to Shira, since these lands are under the district council and schedule under the Indian constitution, how can the current government not even respect the Indian constitution and instead negotiate amongst themselves without taking into account the decisions of the indigenous people who are the true owners of the land
She claimed that when the previous government was in power, under the leadership of Mukul Sangma, the syiems and administration followed the map of the land area. The settlement was postponed due to differences with the counterpart state.
She continued, “These individuals who truly belong to Meghalaya are currently relocated to Assam; they have been in Meghalaya since the state’s statehood, and how can they be shifted to another state abruptly.”
