Trinamool Congress MP Shanta Chhetri demanded in the Rajya Sabha on Friday that the community be awarded minority status in Meghalaya, citing the Centre’s claim in the Supreme Court that states can consider granting Hindus minority status if they believe it appropriate.
During the House’s Zero Hour, Chhetri stated that the Centre has advised the Supreme Court that states can consider granting Hindus minority status if the group is not in the majority in their jurisdiction.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Shanta Chhetri on Friday urged the Union Home Ministry to direct the Meghalaya government to declare Hindus as a minority in the state.
She said that if Hindus are a minority in a particular state, then they can establish and administer educational institutions within the rights granted to minorities by the Constitution.
“I respectfully request that the August House bring to the attention of the Home Minister the urgent need for the Meghalaya administration to award Hindus minority status by a notification in accordance with Article 29 and 30 of the Indian Constitution,” Chhetri stated.
