Due to a doping infraction, Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur has been barred from competing for three years, beginning March 29, 2022, according to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). The AIU, an independent body created by World Athletics that manages all integrity issues, including doping and age fraud, had provisionally suspended Kamalpreet in May of this year after he tested positive for the banned substance stanozolol, an anabolic steroid that is on the World Athletics list of banned substances.
Her samples had been examined at a WADA-accredited laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland. The WADA permitted the 26-year-old to have her samples tested at a private lab as well as the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in New Delhi, both of which came back positive for stanozolol. Following an interview with WADA to let her to explain the positive test, the AIU determined that Kamalpreet was unable to clarify how the chemical entered her body, making her eligible for a four-year ban.
However, Kamalpreet Kaur recognised her breach within 20 days of receiving the notice, allowing her to reduce the term by one year, making it a three-year restriction commencing March 29, 2022. “The Athlete has failed to show that the Anti-Doping Rule Violations were not deliberate. As a result, the mandatory period of ineligibility is four (4) years “The AIU issued a statement.
“However, Rule 10.8.1 ADR states that an athlete potentially liable to an asserted period of Ineligibility of four (4) years may benefit from a one (1)-year reduction in the period of Ineligibility based on an early acknowledgment and acceptance of sanction,” the statement continued. The punishment will keep the discus thrower out of the Asian Games next year as well as the Olympics in Paris in 2024. Kamalpreet, the discus throw national record holder, made her Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, finishing sixth in the final. She joins discus thrower Navjeet Kaur Dhillon, sprinter Dhanalakshmi Sekar, and quarter-miler MR Poovamma on the list of Indians who have recently been banned for doping. Shivpal Singh, a javelin thrower, has also been suspended for doping.
