Gymnast-turned-diver at the national competition Gold medalist in diving Medhali Redkar

When Medhali Redkar’s gymnastics career hit a brick wall, her trainers suggested that she give diving a try as the two sports share a comparable requirement for core strength and acrobatic skills.

Uncertain of whether she had made the proper decision, Medhali Redkar decided to go forward since she held the conviction that fresh ideas shouldn’t be rejected without being tried out first.

Seven years later, the 24-year-old Mumbai native broke state-mate Hrutika Shriram’s dominance of the gold medals by winning the event on Friday at 1M Springboard.

“I had only qualified for the team in one event, and because it was the final event, waiting fatigue was setting in. However, I and my psychologist worked on it, and I nearly won the medal “Medhali, who scored a total of 171.50 points to win the gold medal, stated.
In addition, Medhali Redkar placed sixth in the 1M Springboard event at the just finished Senior Nationals in Guwahati and won a bronze medal in the 3M Springboard competition.

“I was totally confident in my skills. Yes, I did feel a little anxious before the tournament. But I made an effort to limit my attention to my daily tasks today “Medhali Redkar, a licenced physical therapist, should be included.

The 24-year-old gymnast, who has won numerous medals at the national level, has remarked that juggling her academics and sports throughout the years has come naturally to her because she is driven to succeed in both.

“I never intended to limit myself to only academics or athletics. Due to the additional labour required, my social life and friendships suffer. But I’m content with how things are right now,” admitted Medhali Redkar, who spends approximately three hours practising diving in addition to her day job at a nearby sports clinic.

When asked about switching from gymnastics to diving, Medhali Redkar revealed that when she first started working with coach Tushar Gitaye in the Prabodhankar Thackeray Swimming Pool back in 2015, she used to train in both activities.

“Although gymnastics and diving need similar skills, the two sports use very distinct techniques. While in gymnastics you must land on your feet, in diving you dive head first into the sea.

“At first, I didn’t have the appropriate feeling. But in the same year’s school nationals, I came in fourth or fifth, but I was pleased with how my dives were completed and thought I could pursue diving as a career “She spoke. Although diving isn’t one of the most well-liked sports in the nation, Medhali Redkar is optimistic that this will soon change. “Gymnastics was still a relatively unknown sport when I first started. Only until Dipa Karmakar arrived in the Olympics did everyone begin to learn about it.

“Hopefully diving will arrive there soon as well. I’ll be glad to use my performances to help it succeed “Added she.
