Guwahati: Kalakshetra hosts 96 flags; Google pays tribute to Bhupen Hazarika’s on his 96th birthday
To commemorate “Sudhankantha” Bhupen Hazarika’s 96th birth anniversary, 96 flags were flown over the Sankardev Kalashetra grounds in Guwahati. A flag was raised in honour of the “Bard of Brahmaputra” by prominent figures from a variety of fields, including college lecturers and artists and craftspeople. A two-day cultural event in Kalashetra, hosted by the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust, will feature various performers from Assam and other regions of the nation.
The Bhupendra Jyoti magazine would be promoted during the two-day cultural festival, a spokesman of the Cultural Trust also stated. The Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi, which is located near Jalukbari of Guwahati city, is also hosting a few activities in the meantime.
The Indian government honoured Hazarika posthumously with the country’s highest civilian honour, the “Bharat Ratna,” in recognition of his contributions. Hazarika also won the Dada Saheb Phalke, the nation’s top musical honour, for her musical compositions. Hazarika was so beloved by Indian singers who were also his countrymen that he persuaded legends like Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar to perform Assamese tunes.
In the meantime, Google has created a doodle to commemorate the great vocalist Bhupen Hazarika’s 96th birthday. Hazarika was a musician, singer, poet, director, and lyricist who passed away in 2011. In addition, he served from 1967 to 1972 as an MLA in the Assam parliament. He is commonly referred to as “Sudhakantha,” and throughout the course of a six-decade career, he has appeared in hundreds of movies.
The doodle was made by Mumbai-based guest artist Rutuja Mali and features Hazarika playing the harmonium.
