According to reports, a new petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the interim judgment of the Karnataka high court prohibiting students from wearing religious attire in colleges. A student submitted the extraordinary leave petition, claiming that the interim decision has called into question people’s right to conscience, particularly Muslim women students.
According to Livelaw, the petitioner has also requested an ex-parte ad-interim stay of the proceedings in the matter presently before the High Court and passed by a Co-ordinate Bench, in addition to an ex-parte ad-interim stay of the impugned judgment dated 10th of February, 2022.
On Thursday, a full bench of the Karnataka high court heard the hijab ban case and stated that it wants the matter resolved as soon as possible, but that students are not allowed to wear religious clothing in schools and colleges until the matter is resolved, in order to maintain peace and tranquillity.
Aside from the student’s petition, Youth Congress president BV Srinivas filed a new appeal at the Supreme Court on Thursday addressing the same row.
According to a special leave petition filed with the Supreme Court, a Karnataka high court judgment allowing schools and colleges to reopen but prohibiting students from wearing religious attire breaches Articles 14, 15, 19, 21, and 25 of the Indian Constitution.
