Following an explosion inside a mosque in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, many worshippers are feared dead. According to Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran, the explosion took place in the city’s Kotal-e-Khairkhana neighbourhood during evening prayer on Wednesday.
The number of casualties was not specified by the police, who only said there were many. As many as 40 people may have been injured, according to a Taliban intelligence official who spoke to Reuters, and the number may go up. 20 people were killed, according to a source quoted by Al Jazeera.
One child aged seven was among the 27 patients treated at Kabul’s Emergency Hospital, according to a tweet from the facility. Security forces were looking into the incident, according to Zadran, but it was unclear how many people had been affected. For the incident, there was no right away admission of guilt.
Despite the Taliban’s claim that they have improved security, frequent attacks, many of which are claimed by the Islamic State, continue to take place in the nation.
During the chaotic withdrawal of the US-led NATO forces in August 2021, the Taliban retook control and reinstituted their strict rule. The de facto government of the hardliners is still not recognised by any nation.
