IIM Shillong and Meghalaya govt to prepare blueprint for decongestion of Shillong City
The Home Department of Meghalaya is working with other departments to develop a plan to decongest Shillong, which is based on research delivered by Dalberg Global Development Advisors in January 2021. The blueprint has been given to IIM Shillong for expert advice, criticism, and suggestions for improvements.
The Meghalaya High Court recommended that the plan be given to IIM Shillong for any input and direction on the blueprint as it is a specialized institute in management, during the hearing of a PIL filed by one Philip Khrawbok Shati on the issue of decongesting the lovely hill city. IIM Shillong has been given a month to review the entire plan and offer any additions or deletions from the blueprint before the High Court resumes hearing on the matter on October 28.
The four guiding ideas and components of the blueprint—increasing network capacity, increasing the availability of public transportation, managing demand, and reducing the need for travel—are integrated throughout the entire document.
The concept also lays out a strategy for introducing different forms of transportation, such as a ropeway, which would provide a complete view of the hill metropolis. The strategy also includes information on the issue of shops encroaching on roads and footpaths. The Meghalaya government marked the vending locations in Shillong earlier this month to clear the walkways and roadways. The blueprint also suggests building a traffic management center, expanding the road network, and building city bypasses.
