In Meghalaya, violence erupted during an election rally, injuring 11 people.
In the run-up to the next by-election in Meghalaya, violence has erupted in the Rajabala village on Wednesday evening.
Violent fights erupted in Rajabala’s Garodubi village just after the election campaign for the by-election ended.
When enraged Congress supporters allegedly invaded the home of the NPP’s chief party worker, destroying his boundary wall and instilling fear and dread among the family members, including women and children.
Eleven persons were injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment. People from both groups were harmed.
The cause of the problem is unknown, but both Congress and the NPP have blamed each other for the occurrence.
The Congress claimed that supporters returning from an electoral event were assaulted with stones, resulting in multiple injuries and vehicle damage.
Following the incident, West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police V S Rathore, along with extra troops and magistrates, has hurried to the scene.
According to first accounts, some individuals returning from a rally began ripping the NPP candidate’s posters, resulting in the flare-up. “We’ve initiated an inquiry, and a few people have already been detained and even arrested,” V S Rathore said.
Conrad K Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, has expressed shock over the incident and asked for calm ahead of the October 30th elections.
“Many false charges and allegations have been made against the NPP, alleging that they attacked Congress supporters. The truth is out there: our opponents vandalised the home of one of our party’s workers. Even women and children were not spared in that attack. This is a deplorable situation. When asked about accusations that the NPP instigated the brawl, the chief minister responded, “Never has such a thing occurred in election campaigning.”
Meanwhile, District Election Officer Ram Singh has launched an investigation into the event, with magistrates and paramilitary forces stationed in the region.
