As part of their deal with Defence Research Development Organisation, the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy will receive CHAFF technology that will protect warships during hostilities from anti-ship missiles. With the development of this capability, India is now the second country after the United States to do so, a major breakthrough in the field of defence.
The development assumes significance as the Indian navy studies the sinking of the Russian warship Moskva and focuses on how to protect our warships from anti-ship ballistic missiles such as the Chinese DF-21.
CHAFF is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircraft and ships against enemy radar-guided missiles during war. CHAFF’s significance lies in the fact that they act as a decoy to deflect missiles from enemy aircraft or ships and so guarantee the safety of the aircraft or ships.
This enhanced CHAFF system was developed by the DRDO to protect navy ships and fighter aircraft from contemporary day broadband (including high frequency) radar threats.
