Britain’s new prime minister, Liz Truss, was elected leader of the ruling Conservative Party on Monday. She will take office during a period of economic slump, industrial unrest, and rising cost of living. The third female prime minister of the UK after Margaret Thatcher (1979–1990) and Theresa May. (2016-2019).
The declaration on Monday marked the start of Boris Johnson’s transition from party leader to Truss after weeks of a contentious and frequently tense party leadership race that put Truss against former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian descent.
Truss won 81,326 votes, beating Rishi Sunak, who received 60,399 votes, to be crowned the new leader of the Conservative Party.
